12 POLICE OFFICERS KILLED IN VAVUNIYA
12 police officers were killed in a suicide bomb attack opposite the police complex in Vavuniya on the 16th of June. The suicide bomber had arrived on a motorcycle. Police media spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara speaking to TNL RN News said that school children are amongst the injured.
PRESIDENT ASSURES NO DOUBLE STANDARDS
President Mahinda Rajapaksa during an official visit to the UK has observed that there should be no double standards when dealing with terrorism. President Rajapaksa revealed that the LTTE have been allowed to "raise millions of pounds each year from the Tamil Community in Britain". Also, he has revealed that some of the Tamil civilians are being coerced into give away their money by the LTTE extortionists. Elaborating further on the LTTE fund raising in the UK the President
said that about 70 million pounds have been sent for the LTTE collected from about 150,000 Tamils living in Britain.
WTM OUTLAWED IN CANADA
The Canadian Cabinet has outlawed the Toronto-based LTTE front organization, the World Tamil Movement under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Reports stated that the Anti-Terrorism Act, passed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, allows the federal Cabinet to prepare a list of ‘entities’ whose activities are proscribed by Canadian law due to their involvement in terrorist violence. The directive issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions advised banks and insurance companies to notify Canadian authorities if they hold any accounts linked to the WTM.
ACF EXPRESSES LACK OF CONFIDENCE
Aid agency Action against Hunger, ACF announced that it had no confidence in the Sri Lankan government investigation and had quit the island in protest. The Reuters News Agency reported the organization as saying that it wanted an international inquiry into the murders. 17 of the agency’s aid workers were killed in Muttur two years ago. ACF executive director Francois Danel told Reuters that they no longer had any confidence the Sri Lankan investigations would deliver justice.
UNP CALLS FOR ELECTIONS ON THE SAME DAY
The UNP has called on the government to carry out all the provincial council elections on the same day. UNP MP P. Harrison speaking to TNL RN News said that the cost of having the elections on separate days could be minimized by having the elections on the same day. The Sabaragamuwa and North central Provincial councils are due to hold elections, after they were dissolved recently.
ITALY ARRESTS LTTE SUPPORTERS
Italian police arrested 33 Sri Lankan Tamils on the 18th of June on charges of aiding and abetting the LTTE. Some 200 police were involved in the operation which saw raids across the country from Naples in the south to Bologna in the north, and also on the island of Sicily. The 28 people arrested were suspected of membership of the LTTE and of providing funding for the group, which was proscribed by the European Union.
